What it is actually like
A family company of about the size where everybody knows everybody. You will work with the same people most weeks, on jobs within an hour of Stephentown, and you will go home at night rather than living in a motel.
The work is varied because we are not a one-trade outfit. In a given month a crew might strip and re-roof a house, frame an addition, and take a floor out of a hundred-year-old apartment building. If you want to learn a trade properly rather than do the same thing every day, that variety is the whole point.
We do not chase the cheapest job on the board, which means we are not perpetually behind, and it means nobody is asked to cut a corner to make a number work. If something is wrong we take it apart and do it again.
Who we take on
Trades we are usually short of
Roofers
Tear-off and replacement on asphalt, metal and flat. Comfortable on a steep pitch and sensible about harnesses.
Framing carpenters
Walls, floors, roofs, additions and structural repair on old buildings that are not square anywhere.
General laborers
Tear-off, clean-up, materials, and learning a trade from people who will actually teach you one.
Crew leads & foremen
Running a job and a handful of people: setting out the work, keeping it moving, and talking to a homeowner like an adult.
Finish carpenters
Trim, doors, stairs, cabinets. The part of the job the customer looks at closely for the next twenty years.
Apprentices
No experience at all and prepared to turn up and work. That is the whole requirement.
What we ask
- That you turn up, on the day, at the time. It is a low bar and it is the one most people fall over.
- A driving license and a way of getting to the yard.
- That you work safely, wear the harness on a roof, and tell somebody when something is not right instead of hoping.
- That you are civil in somebody’s home. Half our work happens with the family still living there.
- Your own hand tools if you have them. If you do not, that is not a reason for us not to talk.
Experience helps and is not essential. We have taken on people who had never held a nail gun and who are now running crews. What we cannot teach is showing up and caring how it looks when it is finished.
Never done this before?
There is honest work here for someone willing to learn, and being taught by people who have done it for 30 years is a better start than most.
Nobody here is going to laugh at a question. Every one of us was useless at this once.

Straight answers
What does it pay?
It depends on the trade and on what you can actually do, and we will tell you a number on the phone rather than make you guess. We pay properly for people who are good, and we do not haggle downwards once we have said a figure.
Is it year round?
Largely. Roofing slows in deep winter, which is when the interior work and the renovations happen. We would rather keep a good crew busy through February than let people go and try to find them again in April.
How far is the travel?
Most jobs are within an hour of Stephentown. You are home at night.

Subcontractors
If you run your own crew and you are properly insured, get in touch as well. We take on trades we do not carry in house, and we pay on time, which we are told is unusual.
